10 Tips for Approaching Women
December 23rd 2007 17:43
The Personals section of Yahoo! has this article, meant to help men in their desperate times of need. It's called 10 Tips for Approaching Women, and like most fluff articles, it contains nothing you haven't heard before. That doesn't mean it's not good advice, though. You're doing all these things already, right?
Read the article!
Some highlights:
"2. Smile. This shows her that you are friendly and confident. A genuine smile not only feels good to you, but will put her at ease while creating openness in the interaction -- a requirement for building rapport."
Who is approaching women without smiling? What, are you trying to channel a Clint Eastwood persona, hard as nails and able to walk in the desert for 100s of miles? Smile, you inglorious bastard!
Confident, casual eye contact, playful eye contact, these are all good things. I've known guys - computer guys, usually - that take this kind of advice as a boolean state. Smile - ON, eye contact - ON.
The problem is that they're giving the 'I'm so pervertedly obsessed with you' stare, instead of a deep, searching gaze.
My own advice would be: don't approach women when you think it'd be a great idea. I've known women that have been hit on by employees, by employers, at the bar, outside of the bar, in cafes, in libraries, on buses, on the street... and so weite.
Basically, wherever there are women, there are men to hit on them (with the exception of a women's prison, i suppose), and women have learned to steel themselves by ignoring men. Why don't you just give them a break?

"6. Keep eye contact. Never be the first to break eye contact when you approach. If you do, this sends the message that you are not feeling good about approaching. When you use strong eye contact, she will feel more drawn to you. With practice, you can master this."
