I’ve come across dating by dining preference, spiritual persuasion and even match making by pets and their owners. Now I’ve stumbled across a plethora of online dating and matching making sites for fitness fanatics. These websites are designed for people are clearly spending more time on the fitness machines than on the singles circuit.

Personal fitness is one of those funny things where there really isn’t too much middle ground. You’re either really into it and dedicate a fair slice of your spare time to keeping your loins in sleek condition or you just really couldn’t be bothered and have better things to be doing with you’re precious time. I’m not sure if it’s the athletic endorphins that keep the gm junkies slaves to the full length mirrors and stale sweat houses, but once someone crosses into the realm of personal fitness it quickly turns into a way of life

Its the grand finale...

So the question is, would I want my past flame, Tom completely out of my life and would it make finding a new compatible partner any easier for me in the long term. If this is true, then clearly I should be totally disassociating myself from Robert too. Even knowing for the duration of my short term fling that there were no long term prospects, I still went through that post relationship grieving period when the fling with Tom came to a swift end. I could rationalize that what I wanted was never going to happen and yet I couldn’t control the feelings. It was like some bizarre internal battle between my rational brain and irrational feelings. Those battles have resumed since this recent new contact from Tom. The irrational side is totally keen to resume where we left off. That being said, the rational brain is still saying that any such thoughts are absurd and asking for more pain and torture in the long run. When the fuck am I going to stop making excuses and accept that Tom and I have no long term future?

As much as I hate to admit it, the other problem was that I immediately got that excited shot of adrenaline when I saw Tom’s name. Years on and I was still attracted by the mere thought of him. I was absolutely pissed off with myself. Promptly I closed the email and refused to let myself reply until I got home from work, fixed myself a strong alcoholic beverage and had the composure to construct a nonchalant reply. Had I hit the reply button and got typing straight away, I knew whatever was going to flow into that email was going to sound like some lovesick puppy’s verbal diarrhea. Of course, any productive work was also tossed out the window that entire day. My thoughts were milling over this stupid email for hours. What kind of sick joke was this? And why did I still have feelings for someone that I had totally accepted was never going to figure to any great extent in my long term personal life. Above all, when did I start getting into emotional masochism?

This whole saga has got me thinking about whether there are certain people that for one reason or another you’ll always have an attraction for. I can honestly say that there are two people that I have meet in my life that I have been 100% attracted to and could quite happily see myself in a comfortable, long term relationship with them - at least from my perspective. One happens to be is this chap in question. Which I guess is why it takes every ounce of self control to stop myself becoming a gushing idiot whenever he decides to come romping through my hood. I can’t put my finger on why I’ve been so strongly attracted to these two guys. They’re both average in terms of physical looks. Not bad, but certainly not Brad Pitts either. Both have had flaws in their personalities yet for whatever reason, I can’t seem to hold these flaws against them.

A couple days ago I got a random email from an old ex-fuck buddy, Tom and it’s been playing on my mind ever since I opened the damn thing. The background to this new conundrum goes as follows.

Three years ago I got a short internship at a company which was a necessary component of my university degree. I kind of clicked with one of my co-workers and after discovering we shared some similar interests we decided to hit the town together on a Friday night after work. Well combine a few drinks with the fact that I was quite attracted to him and soon enough a nightcap back at his place turned into something more. If the story sounds familiar, this was the office fling I described in an earlier post.

Peeing With the Door Wide Open

Ok, I’m just going to take the opportunity to vent a rather odd experience. Its my blog, I figure I can get selfish with it occasionally and bitch about my self-centred events. Anyhow, I met this guy on Saturday night at a local dance club. We had a great time, there were no fireworks, but had a great time together on the D-floor and spent most of the night together chatting about random crap. We decided to remain in contact and low and behold the next day he called and was asking to hook up later that evening to catch a movie.

Cool, I agreed. It’s not like I had anything better to be doing on a Sunday afternoon. So he arranges to swing by my apartment to pick me up as I still don’t know how to navigate my way around the greater suburbs of my new home in America. Half an hour later we did the meet and great in the lobby and seconds later he had my hand and was dragging me to the lifts leading back up to my apartment.

Reading Signals

One of the hardest things to figure out when you’ve just meet someone new is determining if they’re digging you as much as you are digging them. Dating could be some much easier if we all had an electronic display on our forehead flashing exactly what we were thinking about the person chatting to us. Unfortunately, dating and communicating with others in general is all wrapped up in these frustratingly difficult to decipher “signals.” When you’ve had a chance to get to know someone’s personality a little better reading these signals can be much easier. You’ll get to know how someone behaves when they are in certain moods or scenarios and can adjust your behaviour accordingly. When you’ve just met someone, reading the signals can be near impossible.

What makes reading the signals of a new dating interest so difficult is two fold. For starters there is the gender difference. Men and women think and behave differently and consequently interpret behaviours differently. What a man might think is flirting, a female may think is sleazy. And when some are feeling insecure, others will interpret as aloof, disinterest. So some might say that homosexual relationships have it easy. Men know how men think, women understand women. Well, perhaps to a certain degree but in reality, everyone thinks and interprets behaviours differently. Perhaps there can be certain generalizations made between the sexes but really you’re going to get a mixed bag of personalities within the homo and heterosexual communities of females and males.
