Have you ever been to a bizarre wedding?

November 20th 2006 00:09
I was reading the trash talk about Tomcat’s recent nuptials and I must say these Scientologist’s have some bizarre wedding rituals. Well its not like everyone must come in alien fancy dress and give offerings to the extraterrestrials but the wedding vows are more than a little strange.

According to the masses of media coverage the vows that will be presented to Tom will go along the lines of, "Now Tom, girls need clothes and food and tender happiness and frills. A pan, a comb, perhaps a cat."

And for Katie: "Hear well, sweet Katie. & Tom, For promise binds. Young men are free and may forget. Remind him then that you may have necessities and follies, too."

So it seems that Katie will be getting some cookware, haircare and if she’s on her best behaviour, a cat. Tom will be able to conveniently forget that he’s married and sleep about. It seems that Tom is destined for a life of spousal nagging from Katie. After all, a girl needs her clothes, food, frills and follies. I can only put it down to school boy error that he’s effectively agreeing to spousal nagging in his wedding nuptials.

But the deviations from a standard wedding don’t just stop at the nuptials. There’s also the double ring ceremony. In it, the minister holds up the couple's rings and asks that they imagine a triangle inside them. The minister then asks the couple to imagine affinity, reality and communication as the points of those triangles. Affinity, reality, communication equal understanding is said to represent the long-lasting relationship that they will have.

Now I can’t say that this double ring thing is particularly out there. Its all just a bit of harmless adult imaginary games and the principles aren’t particularly wack. It’s not like the points of the imaginary triangle are set to represent cats, clothes and cookware as the pillars of marital bliss. Nonetheless, it’s all slightly unusual, mystic and odd.

Whilst I didn’t make the cut onto Tomcat’s wedding invitation list. I’ve certainly had my fair share of strange wedding ceremonies and after parties. I’ve been to a traditional Russian Orthodox wedding which was quite different from the norm. The interior of the church was very dark with candles everywhere. I felt like I had walked into cave. The priest sung much of the service in a deep monotone and language I could only assume to have been Russian. All the guests stood for the entirety of the service (word to the wise, don’t be wearing heels to an Orthodox wedding), there was much candle lighting, the bride and groom were draped in sheets and had head dresses attached by string placed on their heads. They then did a few circular laps around the congregation, sung and lit candles.

It was all very cool and different. So, who else has been to an out of the norm style wedding or reception? I’ve always thought a reception sans alcohol would be a complete non-event. I thank my lucky stars I’ve yet to go to one.
