The First Date Guide - Where to Go

January 19th 2007 00:59
You've done the hard work - you've approached someone and not only talked to them but secured both their telephone number and a date. Just when you thought the hard part was over, now comes all the perils of a first date. The big finale to all your hard work is the date itself. There's a lot you can do to prepare, to help things run smoothly (and hopefully help you secure a second date). Over the next few posts I'll cover some ideas to help you prepare for the date and keep things running along smoothly on the date.

Remember, if you prepare, a first date needn't be the harrowing, sweaty palm experience it is often notorious for.

Where to go on a first date:

The first thing to think about is the best place to go. Lunch is a fantastic idea. It usually lasts between one and two hours and there's no pressure to stick around if things don't work out. You can easily excuse yourself without commiting to some four hour ordeal. On the other hand, if things are going great guns between you, you can always suggest to go somewhere else or continue the date after the lunch. The other good thing about a lunch date is that it keeps things casual and informal. This keeps the atmosphere between you and your date nice and relax.

Furthermore, people tend to feel a bit safer in the hustle of a daylight activity when they're with company they don't know all that well. Women may especially be on guard if they don't feel comfortable in their surroundings. All and all, this can lead to awkwardness and an uncomfortable date. A lunchtime date in a nice public area is a good starting point to kick off getting to know eachother.

If you do decide to go out for dinner then take care with the restaurant you choose. Some restaurant environments can be very romantic. They may dim the lights and soften the music, light candles or have serenading musicians around. This can then make it look like you're on a romantic date which for a first date can be a bit too hot and heavy. The first date isn't about being overly romantic, the aim is to get to know eachother better and then decide if romance is on the cards. A first date that is too romantic may put some people off as it comes across as too much, too soon. Whilst I'm not suggesting a date at the local burger joint is particularly appropriate, don't go over the top with your restaurant selection.

If you feel that the date could do with a little romance then you can always add a touch over the course of the night. First see how you are getting along over the first hour or two rather than playing all your cards straight away.
