I Love My Breasts

April 21st 2006 01:14
Some girls love shopping, others love day spas, some love their partner and others just love their breasts. My first reaction was to think you've reached a sad low in your life when your breasts become your best friend. However, for Jessica Simpson, after her recent split with Nick Lachey (funny until reently I always thought his name was the unglamourous nick Lackey) Jess has declared that her breasts are her best friend.

So Jess has told Heat Magazine that "I have amazing boobs. They’re just perfect." Which has got me thinking about that thin line between an a healthy and unhealthy self esteem. I saw that the SMH had some dire statistics reporting the huge proportion of women who have some gripe about their body image. Its not really anything new and as far as I'm concerned the media uses body image as a marketing weapon.

On one hand it'll keep us obssessed by these perfectly airbrushed physiques. Then promises the reader that you too can get to that goal, "just follow our four month eating and exercise fad." (aka, buy each weekly issue or risk morphing into an unsightly creature). Finally, its all rounded off and contracdicted with a good samaritian community message about positive body image tucked away in some rear page doctor or health section. Maybe even something of substance covering eating disorders, compulsive disorders etc.

Well may we ridicule Jessica for loving her breasts, but maybe its time we all took a leaf out of Jess' book and started loving our breasts a little more. At the mole hill scale of Jess' mountains, I'm not willing to concede that my breasts are my best friend. However, today I'm happy to forgive and forget past grievances, lay down the arms (and the chicken fillets, wonderbras and miracle cremes) accept their inadequacies and arch out that back with all the love I can muster.

Today is Self Love Day. I urge everyone to put away the glossy mags and engage in a little self lurving. It'll do wonders.
