Marriage rights for all… have we got it all wrong

October 4th 2006 00:59
The marriage rights debate has been a bit of a sore thumb in just about all cultures and countries. Some states and countries have taken the leap and permitted gay marriages whereas others are sticking to the conservative model for marriage. Rather than rallying for everyone to allow everyone to marry, perhaps we should be abolishing marriage all together.

Marriage seems to be a way of dividing and discriminating the population. The are laws within Australia that protect those in de facto relationships but the lines are far more blurred than for those in a legally binding marriage. Get the right lawyer and a de facto can weasel their way out of any fall out situation. Gay couples can just about forget any legal rights or benefits they may be granted as a couple.

When it comes to issues such as inheritances, beneficiaries, health cover, insurance, taxation, dependents and land ownership it seems ludicrous that a simple marriage document can be the single decisive scrap of evidence in a partner’s claim to finances or financial benefits. Why aren’t living and daily circumstances taken into greater consideration? It is widely accepted that the nuclear family model is no longer a broad spectrum representation of the modern day family so why should modern day issues still be tied to the old world model of marriage.

In my opinion, marriage has somewhat lost its significance in the modern era. Marriage was once a lasting bond through thick and thin. I’m not by any means suggesting that this is necessarily the healthiest way for people to live. I couldn’t think of anything worst than being stuck with someone I disliked. But the reality is that marriage used to be like that.

Take the sensational world of Hollywood and celebrities are changing their husbands and wives with the frequency of their underpants. In my opinion that’s not marriage, that’s dating. Since it is so easy to get in and out of a marriage, I truly think that marriage has lost its validity in modern society.

Sure we all don’t live like Hollywood stars and many marriages in regular society are a true union of people who love eachother. If these couples want to celebrate their love, by all means have the big party but at the end of the day I think that that is all it should be… one big party. People don’t (or at least shouldn’t) get married for the financial or social trade-offs.

Is marriage such a big deal anymore? Should marriage have any bearing on daily issues such as taxation, health policies etc.

Marriage is symbol of your life long commitment to your partner in front god...in sickness, health, richer poorer... it is a symbol that you will stand by that person no matter what happens. If you take those vows seriously... and are prepared to do whatever you can for the one you love...the marriage will succeed.
As for the "hollywood" marriages... do u really consider them marriages or publicity stunts? You know for a fact that there is no way that these shallow self obsessed people are prepared to make the sacrifices that are required to make a marriage successful, so why kid your self. So perhaps they would be better off having a "big party". But i think for all us 'normal' people, marriage and marriage vows still holds a lot of significance for it to be called just a "party".
