Online dating can lead you to your next door neighbor

Most urban families have some access to the internet, which means that kids are growing up with an increasing connection to the global network.
This has its downsides, but one large positive is that the internet is fabulous for bringing people together. When you're a young professional, it becomes increasingly difficult to meet other available singles. Sure, you could do what the rest of the Australian population does and go to the pub, but more and more young Australians are using online dating to meet the right person.
Online dating is a terrific way to meet people that you normally wouldn't be exposed to. You could hook up with someone in the same city, a different city or even different country. It's like spreading your carrier pigeons all over the world, dropping your Valentine's like little bits of invitational candy.
Of course, sometimes online dating can produce strange results. A lady in the UK emailed an electrician on a dating site after seeing his photo, and the two started an email conversation. Things were hot and exciting, I imagine, until she told him she was running out to the shops.
He asked about the shop, then realized that it was the same shop in his neighborhood.
They'd been living in the same neighborhood, for the past 17 years.
""When he told me he lived in (the same street), I thought it was a wind-up.
"I was stunned... He asked me over for a cup of tea, and that was that," she said, while Mr Donnelly, 53, added: "We've got the perfect compatibility. I'm a very lucky man.""

The question is: was the online dating really necessary?
Or should we ask: is there a way to start dating sites for people in your local area?

Two very valid questions in relation to online dating. I'll save my responses for a book I'm working on.

I've always wondered if online dating was necessary. It works well in our connected world, but I'm a big fan of spontaneous chemistry...
