Things my girlfriend and I have argued about

December 12th 2006 03:19
Sometimes the best way to deal with an argument is to take some time out and have a good laugh at all the stupidity. When the chips are down, there's nothing like a bit of comparison to realise that your rocky relationship quibbles are not uncommon and you probably don't have it so bad. If you think your relationship is far from perfect, always remember that there is someone else out there that's got it far worse. I found this site Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About and thought it was teh perfect, light hearted tonic for anyone who has just gone through a bit of a blue with their significant other.

It was hilarious to read the squabbles of Mil and Margaret and the fact that people could actually disagree about cutting fruit. There's also the usual suspects. Disagreements over the TV remote control and domestic duties. Issues we can all relate to.

Whilst Mil and Marget seem to be perpetually at eachothers throats, they raise an extremely good method of dealing with arguments in a relationship, that is the use of humour. Aside from releasing endorphins in the brain that are energizing and good for you, laughter is a very important component in a relationship. Laughter reduces the distress either of you could be feeling and adds to the quality of a relationship. Infact, many relationship experts advise couples to keep a sense of humor when having an argument. It is a very good way of difusing any ill will and keeping the disagreement civil and in context.

Of course, there are some rules and boundaries to be followed when it comes to adding a bit of humour to smooth over a heated relationship. Just as much as humor and laughter can enhance your relationship, they can just as effectively hurt your relationship. These are a few boundaries to consider when it comes to adding a gag to an argument.

1) Humour should be clean. Too much off-color humour can bother your partner. Although you know your partner well, you could still be offensive if your comments are over the top and completely disrespectful.

2) Humour should not attack or be malicious. Making a joke of your partner's appearance or a physical flaw is not really funny. Don't do it, especially not in a ridiculing manor in the presence of other people. Be careful about poking around areas or issues that your partner might be self concious about. Malicious homour will only lead to resentment and the development of a complex.

3) Humour should be balanced. Too many practical jokes, too many gag gifts, too much horseplay, too many witty remarks, too many funny stories, too many off-color jokes, too many blonde or brunette jokes, etc. can all become counter-productive. Everyone loves a larrikin and someone who can make us laugh. Too much and it becomes annoying.

4) Every relationship needs to have fun and laugh, but every relationship also needs to have its time of real, down to earth, serious conversation. Judge the situation wisely. Sometimes an argument can be diffused with a well timed joke, but at other times it may be necessary to address the issue with all seriousness. Make sure that any argument is always resolved.
