Romance: Beyond the Basics

March 21st 2007 00:56
The previous two posts have covered some of the basic elements of romance. Now its time to tackle some of the finer points of romance.

Remembering your beloved's birthday and your anniversary isn't so much romantic as it is a guarantee against cold shoulders and tears. Go to whatever length you need to take to make sure that you never forget a birthday or anniversary. Clear the diary well in advance and plan something special for the day. It only comes round every year, so make the effort.

Romance is personal. To be romantic, you must be personal and do personal kind of things. It's sort of romantic to buy a mooshy greeting card for your loved one, but to be really romantic, you should sign it. As far as birthday presents and so forth go, you can make the gift personal by carefully considering your lover's interests and choosing a gift uniquely suited to her personality. Flowers always works, but a something that demonstrates a bit of extra thought is ultra romantic.

Complimenting your lover in private is a given, right? Next time you feel like expressing your gratitude, pay him or her a compliment when others are listening too. Affirming your love in public reinforces how genuine your feelings are for your significant other. Its important that they feel like you're proud of your relationship.

All humans crave being seen and heard. Being with your partner, and really listening to them can be magical for you both. Often, we want to fix their problems, but it is much more powerful to listen. One of the most romantic and lovng things you can do for your partner is to just be there and offer the support, love, attention and help they may need.

Long lasting relationships are about having fun together and noticing each other. What "being romantic" means varies widely from person to person, but generally, being romantic is about dedicating time to someone for the purpose of pleasing the other person, directly or indirectly.
