Forbidden Relationships – Students and Teachers
November 17th 2006 00:49
There’s no denying that there is something highly attractive about authority figures. Developing a crush on your high school teacher or university lecturer is an amazingly common event. Whether it be a school teacher or a university professor, getting involved with an academic advisor is relationship seppuku for you and the academic superior. What may seem like an innocent fling can lead to all sorts of repercussions for you and the authority figure, typically involving expulsion from the teaching institute and a whole lot of stigmatism from your peers.
Professors are easy to fall in love with. You stare at them for hours. They're punctual. They're great listeners. They don't believe in "stupid questions." They're usually fairly intelligent. And they stimulate your mind in ways you never imagined. Professors and people of authority have a way of making those under them feel comfortable, stimulated and desired - all things associated with love.
It is funny how when a crush develops on a teacher or professor, suddenly it seems like all their teaching attention is directed your way, perpetuating any emotional feeling. When you’ve got a burning desire to get intimate with a teaching figure it seems like all their classroom attention is specifically homing in on you. Any general questions to the class are directed your way, they all ways offer your treats of praise, good grades and remarks of encouragement. Before long they’re every sweep past the blackboard looks like an act of flirtation.
It is funny how the emotional mind works. Innocent behaviour can be skewed and interpreted in the most deceptive of ways. Ask anyone who has developed a crush in their teacher and they’ll be convinced that their teacher is equally lusting after them. “He looks at me weird,” “she always walks past me seductively,” “they told me I was their favourite student.” These are common indications given by students that a teacher is reading their mind and reciprocating an emotional interest. The fact that your teacher/professor probably waltz past everyone’s desk ‘seductively,’ thinks every student is a favourite and makes eye contact with all students several times during a class is completely absurd.
Whilst the majority of teacher/student are one-way affairs, there are definitely cases where a real relationship is kindled. There is little chance of any longevity coming from a relationship that has sprung out of the classroom. The social stigmatism will typical drive a huge wedge when the affair goes public. In fact, most serious student/teacher relationships that become public fish food will usually get some significant media attention. Having your name splashed about the pages of the daily tabloid with outrageous tales of sordid relationships is not the momentous coming of age experience anyone really wants.
