Teenage Heartthrobs
October 2nd 2006 00:29
Confess… confess… who was your teenage heartthrob? The one you’d spend endless math classes day dreaming about and covered every square inch of your school folder with magazine cutouts?
I was never all that excited by Brad Pitt. Which probably made me the only girl in my school that didn’t have a vendetta against Gwyneth Paltrow. When news that the engaged couple broke there was a state of chaos in the school grounds as a flock of frenzied pubescent girls suddenly realized that Brad was back on the market. It didn’t take all that long for the hate mail to start getting redirected to Jennifer Aniston.
So Brad was a little passé for me. Everyone liked Brad so I had to go for something a little more off the cuff. Something a little more edgy and not so mainstream. I think my first ever celebrity crush occurred before I became a teenager and the crown goes out to Billy Idol. In the time scale of things I think I must have been an early developer because I was into Billy back in the late 80s which means I would have developed this crush on him when I was in the 10-12 age bracket.
Anyway, as a kid, I could watch Billy Idol take off his helmet and give that strangely Aryan cold stare (aka the White Wedding video clip) all day. All my real crushes revolved around music stars. When I was in high school I joined the bandwagon of Leo DiCaprio and Johnny Depp followers, but there was never any real passion there. There was a degree of appeal with Leo in Romeo Juliet but it quickly faded after the release of that god awful epic Titanic.
Micheal Hutchence was another figure etched into my brain. I think it was because he was banging Kylie and at the time I thought Kylie was the epitome of popstar brilliance. Michael transformed Kylie into a sex kitten, the Locomotion turned into the Better the Devil You Know.
Then there was *god the embarrassment* Prince. Where I found sex appeal in a 5ft purple elf I will never fathom. There was just something about that Cream video clip, the introductory moaning followed by an ecstatic “ow” in the introductory bars. It was something I had never seen on TV before, yet I knew that I liked it. Goes to show that the ability to play a musical instrument goes a long way in the way I once (and possibly still do) rated men. When he released Diamonds and Pearls, my love of Prince was cemented. First the raw sex appeal of Cream, then the metrosexual, sensitive crooning of Diamonds and Pearls. A bloke that could be a tiger in the sack and loving partner, albeit in song, was the essence of most of my early crushes.
In my later teen years, I guess I was over the whole celebrity crush thing. All those guys on Beverly Hills 90210, Friends, etc. I found them all a tad mehee…

Delvene Delaney was an early fancy (I must have been five or six) My parents always watched Sale of the Century, so any of their female co-hosts were popular. I also always had a bit of a thing for Anne-Marie Biggar off WOMBAT (with Agro). And also Ranger Stacy, although I wasnt a teen any more by then, so I guess that was just plain lust. One or two of the Aerobics Oz-Style girls were also a bit of a treat. There was also this great model on The Price Is Right, but I dont know her name. I think she may have been married to one of the numerous Daddo's.
Now I like Naomi Robson, its just a pity she does such a meaningless show.

I developed a bit of a thing for Tim Bailey when he was on Totally Wild. The appeal was lost when he tuned of kids tv and started doing the weatherman gig.
