The significance of horoscopes for finding a mate
September 11th 2006 00:48
Who here is into horoscopes? I’m one of those skeptical scientific types. If a phenomenon can’t be explained by some neat logical equation or law of nature I have a hard time taking it seriously. I always took for granted that people didn’t really take horoscopes all that seriously anymore. It was something you’d nonchalantly read in the back of a magazine when there was nothing else to entertain yourself with. A couple months ago I meet a random guy in a bar and we got into the usual bar scene chit chat. We were getting on quite well and he enquired when my birthday was.
“July 17th” I replied.
To which he immediately replied,
“Ah a cancerian, eh” and thusly proceeded to make these sweeping accusations about my personality. For a start I thought it was amazing that he knew off the bat what my star sign was. I only vaguely know three zodiac periods. Cancer covering most of July, Pieces covering most of March and Capricorn around January. I only know these because they happen to be the signs of my parents and sibling. Otherwise, buggered if I know what the other months coincide with. In fact I doubt I could even list the remaining zodiac signs with any confidence.
Granted, he may have been in a similar situation and just so happened to have a close Cancerian relative. That still doesn’t explain his vast knowledge of Cancerian traits. Clearly this was a guy who knew his zodiac’s and judged his date potential depending on their star signs. I find it difficult to believe that the way some stars were aligned 24 years ago has a significant bearing on the type of person I am. I certainly wouldn’t be turning to astrology for determining whether I should be dating or pursuing a long term relationship with someone.
However, Mr Astrology wasn’t a freak of nature. I a few of my older friends swear by astrology’s influence in finding a successful relationship. Over social drinks one night one such friend named Robert lamented about a long lost relationship that ended in heart break way back in the 70s.
“She was great, the sex was amazing I just wanted to be with her for the rest of my life, but she turned out to be a typical Scorpian.”
Apparently, Robert is a Sagittarian. Every seemed to nod with silent understanding. I stared blankly. I waited for the astrologically challenged explanation - Scorpios and Sagittarians are an astrological nightmare.
God damn, hippies! When will they grow up. However, I’m open to suggestion. Does anyone use astrology as a relationship aide and what success or accuracy has it born? I might try and find some compatability horoscope guides for shits and giggles and post them up if there’s any interest. Post up your horoscope and I’ll see who you should and shouldn’t be dating.

I'm an Aquarian, and I am in fact an intelligent eccentric with undying curiousity. And I blow hot and cold in the bedrom, just as predicted. Even the book "How to Spot a Bastard by his Star Sign" is pretty true, lol. But in the end, it's only fun and shouldn't really be the basis of serious decisions.
This is the general-traits-type astrology, not the "Today will be a good day and your lucky numbers are 3 and 8". Because that's just BS.
