Unbelievable Makeovers
September 27th 2007 02:57
I'm not a big fan of makeup, but I understand its crucial role in our society. We're bombarded by a constant stream of images that seem to imply that only beautiful women deserve to be happy.
Unfortunately, the idea of a beautiful woman seems to mean a lot of makeup and photoshopping imperfections away.
The good thing about makeup is that it provides a little self-esteem boost. Women that are normally shy or hesitant can find themselves becoming extroverted and confident.
This story appeared on Digg today and is getting a lot of exposure. It's a picture of nine women who won a contest for the Best Makeover, with inset photos of what they looked like before.
Naturally, every one of the 'after' shots is stunning, thanks, I'm sure, to a steaming heap of makeup, revealing clothes and attention to hair.
I suppose the most positive thing to note is that you're not ugly. You're not even plain. You just haven't been dressed up to be absolutely stunning.... yet.

Tash, I'd have to disagree with you. While I think it's too bad that these women need to fluff themselves up to be considered beautiful, I'm sure they get far more attention now than they did before.
So, in some way, it's a successful change.

A primary school teacher went in for a total overhaul, the works,...she hoped her young students would be proud of her.
That she was going to make herself beautiful to be 'accepted' by the world.
Where do I start with how wrong a message that is.
Those students are going to make some therapists very rich. Cosmetic surgeons too.
Still...it's easy to judge others choices without having to wear their shoes.
(um...that was a metaphor...)
Interesting. They all look gorgeous. Hope they feel it once the 'wrapping' comes off.
Hope you're well Cibby...

dusk, yesssss... the wrong message, definitely. But, as the show proves, this is the fastest way to false 'happiness'.
Amen to your sentiment: 'Hope they feel it'
Also, did they deliberately make the before photos so plain and frumpy?

That said, I am addicted to makeover shows. They are often hilarious.

Pretty interesting that all of the "afters" are from one template: big hair, big eyes, white teeth, hourglass figure, on the tall side.
I say, live and let live. If these women want to spend their money on something as fleeting as looks--and it gives them more self-confidence--let 'em. They're not hurting anyone as long as they don't preach that looks are everything to their kids.
After all, we're bombarded with that message in the media on a daily basis and most of us have the common sense to dismiss it as crap.
I was laughing at the comments in the original article; lots of guys making "morning after" jokes when you know they'd fall all over themselves if one of those "afters" talked to them...
Interesting ad on this post, by the way..beautiful single girls for beautiful or wealthy men? HAHAHAHA!!!!!

D, the ad is hilarious, isn't it?
I still can't make up my mind if this is good or bad. Like Dusk said, it's a positive effort if the women have improved self-esteem after the makeup is removed.

Mind you, I am not so flippant when it comes to men wearing bronzer - the universal solvent for a man's testicles.
The jury's still out on how emasculating a "chemical peel" is. A euphemism for "burning your face with acid", that does look rather nasty.
