Valentines Day
February 1st 2007 00:50
Just a reminder... we're into Feburary which means Valentines Day is just around the corner. If you're planning on doing something special for Valentine's Day, now is the time to start booking and preparing to make sure you get those fabulous seats and sweet delights.
Despite all the marketing and commercialism of the modern Valentines Day, it origins come from a true tale dedicated to love. Legend has it this holiday was originally derived from a priest named Valentine in third century Rome. When the emperor decided that single men made better soldiers then married men, he outlawed marriages. Valentine finding this new law unwarranted went against the emperor's orders and married young couples in secret. When he was found out he was immediately put to death on February 14th. In memory of his sacrifice we continue to celebrate our love on the last day of his life.
Valentines Day is a good excuse to let the people you love know it. Single, in a relationship or married, why pass up a chance to make the people you love feel special. Sending a e-card, a single rose or writing a poem, people love to be thought of now and then. Be original, creative and fun and you'll get the desired response. Whatever Valentines Day means to you embrace it, don't fight it. We don't have nearly enough excuses to spoil the people we care about, why give up a opportunity such as this.
Here are a few ideas for some simple Valentines Day gestures you can throw around to your friends, family or sweetheart.
1. Send a card and make up your own spin on the "Roses are red..." poem.
2. Give them an "I Owe You." Nothing says I love you like volunteering to be a slave. Doing someone a favour and helping them with their chores is a great way of expressing your thoughts.
3. Write a song for them. There's no need to be a budding Grammy winner. Something silly, short and sweet can put a smile on anyone's face. Be inventive.
4. Give them a plant. A plant can be a great symbolic gesture of a relationship together. Plus, unlike flowers they'll keep for longer.
5. Make a public sign. Ransack the bedsheets and write a big loving note to your lover. Find somewhere to string it in public. A pedestrian overpass is always a good option. Let the whole world know you're madly in love.
