Forbidden Relationships – Your Boss

November 15th 2006 01:33
I guess there are times we all want to see our boss get screwed, some people are more active than others and then there are those that take the notion a little too literally. Most people spend close to half to almost most of their waking hours at work – it’s a home away from home. Work is hard enough to drag yourself out of bed for each day let alone having to deal with former friends or acquaintances getting bitchy, dishing out issues or causing a general hostile environment.

Anyone who is looking to date his or her boss needs to ask one important question: why? It’s the same question everyone needs to ask themselves when they’re looking to date anyone, but it’s extra special when dating your boss. Dating becomes a different game when the significant other controls your paycheck. It’s fine if you get together, things develop and you get married and live a life of bliss. It is possible that you end up that way, but it’s not something you want to bet on.

The vast majority of relationships end in disaster – even marriages are as likely to work out as not. If you’re only looking for something casual, there are other considerations, too. What if they suddenly want something serious and you can’t give them that? What if they end up dating someone else from work – or you do? There are a lot of areas where tragedy can strike and hurt you the most by crippling both your heart and your bank account in one quick motion. Make sure you have a good enough “why” before you begin dating your boss.

With working hours extending into our daily lives, we probably end up seeing our bosses and co-workers more than our families. According to recent statistics, “twenty-one percent of workers admit they have dated their boss, up from just 14 percent last year. Nearly four-in-ten say they have dated someone with a higher position in their organisation.”

Not to say that dating a boss can’t help you climb the career ladder either. While men were only slightly more likely to date their bosses than women were, they were far more inclined to say the relationship boosted their careers. Twenty-five percent of men who dated the boss said the relationship helped move their careers forward, compared with only 13 percent of women.

If you do decided to jump in the sack with your boss, always keep in mind that losing your job could be a real possibility. In fact, it is probably better to err on the side of caution and expect to lose your job over an office love affair with your boss. It is reported that one in ten office relationships will drive an employee out of their job. Weigh up the options and if you’re a safety first kind of gal/guy it is probably better to fish in someone else’s pond.
